This free, one-day event will feature displays from local museums and heritage sites across Thanet and East Kent, celebrating the area’s rich history, from flying aces to historic holy sites.
A selection of Ramsgate Archive papers, chronicling the town’s history over the past hundred years, will be on display. We will also have our passionate and friendly volunteers on hand to offer expert advice and inspire visitors in their own historical investigations.
The Tunnels’ popular Deep Tunnel Shelter tours will operate as normal, standard rates apply, throughout the day (pre-booking advised). Accompanied by our knowledgeable guides, step back in time to the build-up and outbreak of the Second World War and hear the story of how the town’s visionary mayor and borough surveyor oversaw the construction and use of the UK’s largest purpose-built civilian shelter. You can also hear the stories of those who ended up living within the old Victorian railway tunnel.
For those wishing to take a break, the Tunnels’ café will be open all day, offering a tempting selection of refreshments, light snacks, and cakes.
With so much to see and do, Local History Day is an unmissable event for history lovers, enthusiasts, or anyone planning their next weekend outing. To book a place on a tour, or to learn more about the organisations taking part, please visit the Tunnels’ website.
